Risks & Side Effects of Estrogen Therapy

Estrogens increase the risk of endometrial cancer. Estrogens and progestins should not be used for the prevention of cardiovascular disease or dementia.

Estrogens should not be used in women with:

  • Undiagnosed abnormal genital bleeding
  • Known, suspected, or history of breast cancer
  • Known or suspected estrogen-dependent neoplasia
  • Active deep vein thrombosis, pulmonary embolism, or history of these conditions
  • Active or recent arterial thromboembolic disease
  • Liver dysfunction or disease
  • Known or suspected pregnancy
Common side effects of estrogen therapy include headache, breast tenderness, and back pain.

Benefits of Estrogen Therapy

Estrogen therapy can be indicated for the treatment of the following conditions associated with menopause: moderate to severe vasomotor symptoms; moderate to severe symptoms of vulvar and vaginal atrophy; and the prevention of postmenopausal osteoporosis. Not all forms of therapy are indicated for all uses.
